For our 'Global Community' section of One World Week, we spoke to the International Student Support Team at the university, to hear their thoughts on making new connections, maintaining relationships across the world, and how students can develop a sense of community during this time.

What makes international students such an important part of our student community at Coventry University?

We are a global university and our international students are an important part of our community. They bring great value to our multicultural environment and provide different perspectives and experiences on the courses that they are studying, to the wider university and to our local communities. It benefits all of our students and staff to meet people from around the world; we all benefit greatly from the mix of culture, language and global experience they bring.

What advice would you give to international students who have not been able to return home during the pandemic?

Visit the Return to Campus Hub on the Student Portal where there is lots of information about teaching and learning arrangements while you’re here in the UK, and access to campus and services. There are also frequently asked questions specifically for international students.

We would encourage you to continue to be in contact with family and friends in your home country to keep connected. If you are feeling lonely or isolated, we have a Keeping in Touch Service for international students to receive a weekly phone call for advice or an informal chat. The Connection Matter site also has a lot of useful information to support your wellbeing and to stay connected, as well as online events and resources.

What support is available for international students at Coventry University who might be feeling isolated during this period?

If you’re feeling lonely, you can register for our Keeping in Touch service to receive a friendly phone call from a member of International Student Support. You’ll receive a phone call once a week throughout lockdown, whether you are currently in the UK or in your home country. It doesn’t have to be for advice, it can be for an informal chat, and you can choose to speak with an International Student Ambassador or a member of the International Student Support Team. As this is a friendly checking in service we advise that if you need to discuss an issue you request a formal appointment with an International Student Advisor. The Students' Union International Community also offer a wide range of events to get you connected with others.

If you’re staying in university-owned accommodation, our Residence Life ?are?available to support?your wellbeing and social needs.?You can also access Togetherall, a completely anonymous digital mental health community,?available online 24/7 for you to express yourself freely and openly, and Student Space has lots of useful advice to help you cope if you’re feeling isolated.

Our welfare and mental health services continue to be available online, whether you’re in the UK or in your home country. Contact the service for your location and the team will assess your situation and arrange a?virtual?appointment and referral where necessary.

What advice would you give to international students who want to make new connections but are not studying on campus right now?

There’s are lots of virtual events and opportunities you can get involved in from wherever you are, which are great ways to connect with likeminded people – The Students' Union runs events throughout the year for you to take part in and meeting new people, and you can also check out the Student Portal opportunities and events pages for all the latest. Connection Matter is a great resource to access support and find out about activities that can help you feel more connected, and you can also become or request support from a student peer mentor.

Wherever you are, make sure you’re keeping in touch with your fellow course mates and getting involved in activities where you can!
