Support in Light of a Recent Student Death

CUSU statement on the recent death of a Coventry University student.

Some of you may have heard that a Coventry University student has tragically passed away in a privately owned halls of residence in Coventry. We ask that you respect the privacy of the students’ family and friends, but know that this news will deeply affect many within our staff and student community.  

The university counselling and mental health service is offering counselling support to all who have been affected. You can contact them by calling 02477 658 029 or you can book an appointment online here: 

It is important to know that there is a plethora of resources available to provide support to all who are experiencing any distress at any time during your time here. If you, or if you notice a friend or peer, demonstrating any of the below signs, then reach out to a support service or engage in a conversation with whoever you’re concerned about and encourage them to access support services.  

Signs of Low Mood:  

  • Severe sadness or moodiness - could be a sudden or long-term change in emotional state demonstrated in long-lasting sadness, mood swings, or unexpected rage. 

  • Expressions of feelings of hopelessness of the future and low expectation of circumstances improving  

  • Withdrawal from studies, social life and loss of interest or pleasure in activities that the individual previously enjoyed. 

  • Changes in personality or appearance – this could be speaking slower, faster, or being less/ more engaged in activities and less of a concern around personal appearance.  

  • Recent trauma or life crisis- an individual is more at risk of experiencing a low mood if they have experienced a traumatic event, which can be anything from not performing as academically hoped for to loss of a loved one.  

  • Increased anxiousness  

  • Low confidence/ self-esteem 

  • Struggles with sleeping 

  • Loss of appetite

Coventry University Counselling and Mental Health Service – Here you can contact a mental health advisor who will be able to either provide you help or guide you towards additional support from external agencies.

Papyrus (Prevention of Young Suicide) – Here you can access support if you are experiencing suicidal thought or are concerned that a friend or peer is experiencing suicidal thoughts.
