We have recently submitted Coventry University’s Access and Participation Plan (APP) Student Submission to the Office for Students (OfS).

What is an Access and Participation Plan?

The Access and Participation Plan outlines Coventry University’s commitment to improving the experience of underrepresented students during their student journey, and reducing inequalities. The APP is a detailed plan for how the University will promote access, success, retention and progression across the student body so our students are able to achieve their full potential. CUSU work closely with the university on the access and participation plan, helping to ensure that the university meets its APP targets.

The OfS receives regular updates from Coventry University on the APP Progress.

The Student Submission

The Student Submission ensures that Coventry University does not deviate from its commitment to meeting the targets set in the Access and Participation Plan.  The Student submission is an opportunity for us to highlight what the university is doing well, while identifying areas for further analysis, review and action. CUSU undertook a number of focus groups with students, in order to provide feedback on the progress of the APP from relevant groups of students such as Disabled students, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and care leavers, as well as looking at data provided by student participation in the APP coalition group.

We also provided feedback on how the university can involve students in the delivery of APP targets through APP information sessions, so students can propose their own initiatives for the APP. The unprecedented nature and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Coventry University’s Access and Participation Plan cannot be denied, we however had some suggestions on how the university can work with students to meet the targets in the APP plan.

We provided feedback on a variety of important areas such as employability, Mental Health Services, Disability Services, and COVID-19 hardship.

Some of our suggestions to the university include:

  • More transparency with how the university plan to make improvements to the student experience.
  • Formally embedding wider student consultation into the APP evaluation strategy.
  • Increased mental health and wellbeing support.
  • Ensure greater student consultation throughout the year, ensuring that all students are aware of the APP and its targets.
  • Develop signposting and sources of information, to ensure that all students are aware of support available.
