We had a very busy time on campus for our Volunteering Week of activities.

As a starter, we welcomed students to join us for coffee on Monday 4 October. Our volunteering Coffee and Meet event was open to students to come and meet the volunteering team and talk about the opportunities available to them over a cuppa and a cake – which always goes down well!

On Wednesday 6 October, we held our Volunteering Fair. As last year’s fair was a virtual one because of the pandemic, it was so good to be back on campus in 2021 and to welcome all the organisations who came to The Hub to take part.

We had 96 volunteers interacting with stall holders and over 400 opportunities applied for on the day.

The fair is the perfect opportunity to find some volunteering work that fits with your schedule. In previous years, it had taken place in Square One of the Hub, but this year, it took place on the ground floor and the first floor, so students could walk around, mingle and chat with the charities to see what they had to offer.

It was wonderful to see so many students talking to the representatives of the charities who came to The Hub to support the event, they included: British Heart Foundation, Carers Trust Heart of England, Caudwell Children, Coventry Independent Advice Service (CIAS) Coventry Scout County, Culture Coventry, Human Appeal, Mercia MS Therapy Centre, Myton Hospice, Over the Wall children's charity and UHCW - Compassionate Communities.

All the students who attended the fair had the added bonus of being entered into a prize draw to win an Amazon voucher for signing up to volunteer with one of the organisations above.

The week ended on Friday 8 October with another one of our ‘Hog Friendly Litter Picks.’ Ten volunteers kindly giving up a couple of hours of their time to sweep the campus and the surrounding area for litter.  They started at the Hub, went past the Richard Crossman Building and then onto Mile Lane and back.

These litter pick events are to prevent any wildlife, that may come onto campus, from getting trapped in any discarded plastic waste. The most vulnerable creatures, and the ones that are declining in population, are the hedgehogs.  Thanks to our volunteers, these little creatures of the night will be able to roam safely and hopefully, continue to build up their numbers.

Once again, thank you to everyone who took part in the Volunteer Week activities. It is so good to see so many of you back on campus, and we look forward to welcoming you to future events. If you didn’t manage to get to the Volunteering Fair, then don’t worry, you can still sign up and volunteer by visiting our page on the CUSU website: https://www.cusu.org/volunteering/
